VanGo meets Florida Visual Arts Standards and integrates mathematics, language arts, science and social studies:

VISUAL ARTS

Skills and Techniques

Standard: The student understands and applies media, techniques and processes.

VanGo students:

• Create artworks that are personally meaningful and draw from experience, observation and imagination

• Use tools and media responsibly and safely

• Identify and utilize the elements and principles of art as part of VanGo’s exhibit and activity

• Understand, utilize and assess good craftsmanship in creating 2D and 3D art

• Compose with 2D and 3D geometric shapes: Mathematics

• Utilize multiple strategies to develop grade appropriate vocabulary: Language Arts

• Recognize that the shape of materials such as paper and clay can be changed by cutting, tearing, crumpling, smashing and rolling: Science

• Demonstrate understanding of the world in spatial terms: Social Studies


Creation and Communication

Standard: The student creates and communicates a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas using knowledge of structures and functions of visual arts.

VanGo students:

• Create and communicate a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas using knowledge of visual art

• Celebrate and communicate cultural understanding by creating artwork based on subject matter and symbols

• Interpret, select and utilize media to communicate an idea

• Identify, analyze and discuss purposes in creating works of art

• Describe and analyze shapes and space: Mathematics

• Develop and demonstrate informative writing related to VanGo’s exhibit and activities: Language Arts

• Sort objects by observable properties such as size, shape, color, temperature, texture and weight: Science

• Understand methods of communication and developments that facilitate visual communication: Social Studies


Cultural and Historical Connections

Standard: The student understands the visual arts in relation to history and culture.

VanGo students:

• Comprehend the visual arts in relation to history and culture, emphasized by VanGo’s exhibits

• View and discuss art from different periods of time and cultures

• Understand that artists create their work based on life and cultural experiences

• Develop creative writing skills related to life and cultural experiences: Language Arts

• Recognize that both human activities and natural events can have major impacts on the environment: Science

• Understands cultural and historical beliefs are reflected in art forms: Social Studies


Aesthetic and Critical Analysis

Standard: The student assesses, evaluates, and responds to the characteristics of works of art.

VanGo students:

• Make observations about artwork using the elements and principles of design

• Experience artwork in a variety of styles

• Compare and contrast similarities and differences in genres of artwork

• Describe and discuss the properties and 2D and 3D space, shape and form: Mathematics

• Collect, process and present information: Language Arts

• Recognize and explain the difference between personal opinion/interpretation and verified observation: Science


Applications to Life

Standard: The student makes connections between the visual arts, other disciplines, and the real world.

VanGo students:

• Discuss and describe how the arts impact everyday life

• Identify, describe and discuss the skills and knowledge needed for artists to produce artwork

• Views, discusses and participates appropriately in the VanGo exhibit and activity

• Discuss and describe shapes and forms: Mathematics

• Effectively apply listening and speaking strategies: Language Arts

• Raise questions about the natural world, investigate solutions and generate appropriate explanations: Science

• Understands how ideas, decisions and events shape art, history and culture: Social Studies
